In 2010, Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo hit The New York Times best sellers list. On the sixteenth of April, the movie based on the book hit the theaters. Seeing that the film made $29.56 million in its first five days of being released, it’s evident that the book’s fans came out in masses to see the movie that critics had been raving about.
The film follows the story of a four-year-old boy living in Nebraska who claims to have met Jesus and seen his grieving parents from Heaven while undergoing an emergency appendectomy. Colton Burpo has many other interesting encounters while in Heaven that his family and people across the world were eager to hear, such as meeting his sister who had died in the womb, and meeting his great grandfather who had died previous to Colton’s birth. Colton’s father, Todd, author of Heaven is for Real and pastor at Crossroads Wesleyan Church, struggles to grasp the concept of his son traveling to and from Heaven without his heart actually stopping and being pronounced dead. The story of the family’s hardships dealing with such an event, shows the true nature of Christianity and faith itself.
Throughout the film, the audience questions their own religious views and the idea of this experience possibly being true. The plot could easily be described as lacking real events with most of the movie consisting of reactions to Colton’s experience. Overall, Heaven is for Real is a heart-warming tale of a family coming together through faith that will inspire everyone who goes to see it, and proves to be worth your time, whether or not you believe Colton’s story.
