Pros and Cons of Getting Your Driver’s License
When your a teenager, getting your driver’s license is the first real taste of freedom. It is the ability to go where you want to go, and do what you want to do. However, all good things come with a price, and a driver’s license is not an exception.
Pro- You Can Go Wherever You Want, Whenever You Want.
When you, at sixteen years old, receive your driver’s license, the ability to go wherever you want is possibly the most exciting part of the package. Until now, you had to catch a ride with anyone who was willing to drive you, your mom, dad, grandma, or even older siblings. But with a license, you operate on your own schedule. Nobody can tell you what time you can go somewhere, or what time you have to come home.
Con- You Have to Go Wherever Mom Wants You To Go, Whenever She Wants You To Go.
If you thought chores were bad before you got your license, you are in for a rude awakening. Before, mom gave you simple chores, like do the dishes, or set the table. However after you get your license, it’s a whole new animal. She may ask you to go the store and spend half an hour fining groceries, or she may want you to take your brother to soccer practice, wait an hour for practice to end, and then take him home. Be ready for an increase in mundane chores when you get your license, as it an unfortunate, but definite part of the package.
Pro- You Can Drive to School.
A school bus is like a jungle, from the outside it looks peaceful and innocent. However, on the inside it is chaos, kids jump up and down, throw things, and yell indefinitely. The school bus is no place you want to be at six in the morning when you are trying to sleep, or even two in the afternoon when just want to go home. A driver’s license frees you from the nightmare that is the school bus.
Con- But… It’ll Cost You.
The twenty first century has brought some of the highest travel costs ever. The most obvious blight on our wallets these days is the skyrocketing price of gas. With an average per gallon price of $3.25, according to GeorgiaGasPrices.com, the price really racks up the more you travel. But, gas isn’t the only expense, car insurance is required for every driver, and it isn’t cheap. In fact, adding a teen driver onto an insurance plan can nearly double its monthly rate. With the high cost of driving, teens are left with two options, drive sparingly, or get a part time job.
While driving has its ups and downs, it is undoubtedly an exciting part of any teenagers life. So while there are some drawbacks, enjoy it. After all, you have waited sixteen years to get it.
